In a Galaxy Far, Far Away… Best and Worst of the Star Wars Original Trilogy

StarWarsFinding flaws in the Prequels isn’t a challenge. Everyone does it. But judging the Best and Worst in the Original Trilogy which  I’ve seen so many times and that are iconic is harder than bullseyeing womp rats back home. So I picked out a few favorites, a few misses, and especially looked for connections back to the Prequels that stood out on watching all 6 films in a row.

Worst Thing: The Special Edition. Yes, the Jabba scene isn’t needed and Han shot first. However, it is the clutter that most gets me. Every scene has to be endlessly busy at all times. The least George could do is release a box set that also had the otherwise unavailable original versions.

Other Bad Things:

  • Anyone insisting on the full title “Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope.” I saw it in the theater as Star Wars. It will always be Star Wars.
  • cd9b6f313d7f48c9ef93cbb38d45bd5b.jpg“But I was going into Tosche Station to pick up some power converters” – Luke is whiny like is his dad, but without so much anger.
  • Obi-Wan looks terrible after 19 years of living in the desert.
  • The heavyset X-Wing pilot is named Porkins.Jek-Tono-Porkins-600x295.jpg
  • Chewbacca, in what can only be seen as a racist move, doesn’t get a medal in the closing ceremonies. MTV rectified it somewhat in 1997.

Best Thing: Han Solo. And he isn’t introduced until 48 minutes into the movie.

Other Good Things

  • Although stereotyped, C-3PO makes a great gay Jew. “We seem to be made to suffer.”
  • Luke isn’t introduced until 17 minutes into the film. Lucas had patience in this film.
  • Aunt Beru: “He has too much of his father in him.” Uncle Owen: “That’s what I’m afraid of.”
  • Double Sunset

The Empire Strikes Back (1980)

Worst Thing: There is no worst thing in this movie. I have called this my favorite movie of all time. While not perfect, it has no worst thing.

Other Bad Things:

  • Special FX on the Wampa are pretty weak. Apparently there was a whole wampa subplot cut because the creature was lacking.
  • “No, there is another.” If it refers to Leia (which it seems when referenced again in Jedi), it doesn’t make sense as Obi-Wan already knows – he was at the birth. One theory says it is Yoda seeing the good in Anakin still. Or maybe it was a long-play set up for Episode VII and Han and Leia’s presumed daughter?
  • The torture scene – I just don’t like watching it.

Best Thing: “No, I am your father.” Shocking. Iconic, Misquoted. And heavy spoofed and spoofed and spoofed.

Other Good Things:

  • Imperial Death March
  • Tauntauns
  • Chewbacca’s scream when the shield doors are closed.
  • AT-AT Walkers

  • The asteroid field
  • The back of Darth Vader’s unhelemeted head
  • “No. Try not. Do. Or do not. There is no try.”
  • Lando – an actual non-white human in the series.
  • Lobot
  • “We would be honored if you would join us.”
  • Chewbacca all the time – he laughs at Han, saved C-3PO, screams in anguish when the shield doors are closed with Han and Luke outside, takes care of a wounded Han, chokes Lando. Chewie is the best.
  • Himage-iceswcarbonite-0-shsnowatermark.jpgan Solo in Carbonite. Get your own in ice cubes or my dream, a life-sized one
  • The lightsaber duel between Vader and Luke.
  • Everything about Luke’s chopped off hand.
  • “You have failed me for the last time, Admiral.” Darth Vader’s whole management style.

Return of the Jedi (1983)

Worst Thing: The punk way Boba Fett dies. He deserved better. Many claim he lived and that he is even in Episode VII.

Other Bad Things:

  • The Sarlacc looks like a low rent Audrey 2.
  • Film was more juvenile than Star Wars or Empire. I was already 13 when it came out, so I was not impressed.
  • How does Leia remember her mother? Padmé died in childbirth. Explanations after-the-fact are weak.
  • The plot is basically the same as the end of Star Wars. Shouldn’t the Empire have fixed it so a small ship can’t single-handedly destroy the Death Star?
  • R2-D2 has a total meltdown, but is seen perfectly fine a couple scenes later.

Best Thing: The reveal of Leia as the Bounty Hunter Boushh. Women don’t have that much to do in the 6 films, so this is a big deal. Looks like Episode VII will continue the trend.

  1. Best recap of my favorite trilogy of all time. Thank You

  2. Diane says:

I will never forgive them for reworking the Ewok song at the end of the movie. The original was sooo much better, imho.
